Natural, or alternative medicine, differs from the conventional medicine model in a very important way. In the conventional model, a patient is seen by a doctor who must come up with a diagnosis with a properly selected insurance billing code in order for a third party payer to reimburse the doctor.

Additionally, that diagnosis code must be accompanied by a procedure code(s) that will satisfy a non-medically trained insurance company employee who will be reviewing the doctor's codes and office visit details. You, as the patient have been removed from the process of your healing and decisions about what drugs you'll be prescribed, which tests will be run, what in office or surgical suite procedures will be done, and so on have now become part of the game between the doctor and what he or she can "get away with" to get reimbursement from an insurance provider.

In natural or alternative medicine,, even though some insurance companies will reimburse some office visits and procedures, the goal is to find out the physical and emotional symptoms that often go hand in hand and to help you to become an active participant in your getting better. As the patient, you'll share equal responsibility with the doctor in making the dietary and lifestyle changes necessary to help whatever natural medicine procedure or substances the doctor chooses to address your health concerns. In other words, the power of your health has been returned to you as you and the doctor form a team to help you get back to how you want to feel.
